GROVELAND, Florida — A Villages resident dressed in Santa leggings, a red shirt and no shoes was arrested for domestic battery Monday after her companion called law enforcement from the shoulder of Florida’s Turnpike.
According to an arrest report, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper responded to a call of a drunken woman attacking her companion and beating on the windows of a Nissan Rogue.
As the trooper arrived on scene, he saw Gloria Joanna Miller, 54, was still beating on the windows, crying and yelling at the male still inside the Rogue. The trooper separated Miller from the vehicle and tried to calm her down. Miller, crying and with alcohol on her breath, reportedly stated, “I’m sorry. This is my fault. I’m so embarrassed,” over and over. She told the trooper she and the man were on their way to a Christmas party and her companion was an “(expletive.)”
Miller’s companion, who was cut near his right eye, told the trooper his glasses cut him when Miller hit him. He went on to tell the trooper the pair was on their way to a Christmas party at Lakeridge Winery. “[She] was drunk before we got to the winery,” he said. He told the trooper when they arrived at the winery, no one was there. This apparently infuriated Miller, who began screaming it was the man’s fault, cursing him and calling him names.
The victim told the trooper he was going to take her home because she was drunk. He said Miller got very angry and began to, “hit me and pound on me many times,” the affidavit states. The victim lost control of the vehicle many times, he told the trooper. Miller allegedly hit him in the face and knocked his glasses off. He then pulled onto the shoulder and Miller exited the vehicle. The victim locked the door and Miller beat on the windows until the trooper arrived.
Lake EMS transported Miller to Orlando Health Blue Cedar for treatment, where she was later released to FHP’s custody.
Miller was charged with domestic battery and released Tuesday on $500 bond.
