LEESBURG, Florida — A man who told Lake County Sheriff’s deputies his gun accidentally discharged, killing his girlfriend, has been charged in her death.
Deputies responded to a domestic dispute around 1:20 a.m. Thursday at a home on Fillmore Avenue in Leesburg, said LCSO Sgt. Fred Jones.
When they arrived, Renee Aviles, 33, told them he was arguing with his girlfriend, Traci Hamby, 37, when she attacked him, causing him to accidentally discharge his firearm, Jones said. Hamby was pronounced dead on the scene.
Detectives were on scene of the shooting for several hours and after consulting with the State Attorney’s Office, Aviles was charged with manslaughter. “Some things just weren’t adding up,” Jones said.
Aviles has been booked into the Lake County Jail and is presently being held without bond.
