TAVARES, Florida — A Umatilla man fleeing a hit-and-run crash probably did not expect the third vehicle he hit would belong to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office
Tavares Police responded to the area of U.S. Highway 441 and Lake Eustis Drive in reference to a hit-and-run. Police made contact with Lake County Sheriff’s Capt. Jack Holder who told the officer he had been involved in a hit-and-run crash, according to an arrest affidavit.
Jeremy Rogers-Lane, 26, first struck a woman’s vehicle and tried to leave. The woman followed him, but he made several turns trying to evade her, eventually leading her to Lake Eustis Drive, near Lake Junietta Drive. Rogers-Lane tried to go around another woman’s vehicle and he hit her and struck Holder, who was in the oncoming lane. Holder, driving an unmarked unit, swerved to avoid the crash, but was still struck, the affidavit states.
Holder turned around and followed Rogers-Lane, catching up to him near Ann Rou Road. Rogers-Lane left the road and made a U-turn in the middle of Lake Eustis Drive and continued westbound. Holder caught up to him again near Lake Junietta Drive and activated his emergency lights. Rogers-Lane continued driving down Lake Eustis Drive and turned onto U.S. Highway 441. Holder said he slowed several times as if he were going to stop, but kept going, the affidavit states. He finally stopped about 100 yards later near El Red Drive.
Rogers-Lane was issued numerous traffic citations and arrested for two counts of leaving the scene of a crash with property damage. He is being held at the Lake County Jail on $2,000 bond.
