VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida — A Tavares man returning home from Daytona Bike Week was killed Thursday afternoon.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, around 4 p.m. Thursday, Steven Werner, 70, was on a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling southbound on Tomoka Farms Road behind a 2016 Chevy pickup being driven by Joanne Christensen, 50, of Port Orange. The pickup slowed to make a left turn onto Country Circle Drive and Werner failed to slow and struck the pickup. Werner was then struck from behind by a 2017 Harley Davidson being ridden by Naomi Bowman, 73, of Winter Garden. Bowman is Werner’s girlfriend.
Werner was killed on the scene and both Christensen and Bowman were taken to Halifax Medical Center. Bowman remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Werner and Bowman were both wearing helmets and Christensen was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash is under investigation.
