LEESBURG, Florida – Leesburg Police are investigating a shooting that happened late Tuesday night. Akeem Rich, age unknown, was taken to Leesburg Medical Center by an unknown person, late Tuesday night with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center, where he is currently in critical, but stable condition in a medically-induced coma, said Leesburg Police Capt. Joe Iozzi. Officers were able to speak with Rich briefly before he was flown to Ocala, but will speak with him more after his condition approves.
Officers obtained information the shooting occurred at Birchwood Villas Apartments and went to the scene to investigate. Upon arriving, officers spoke with an anonymous subject who pointed them in the direction of the actual crime scene, where officers found a trail of blood. Crime scene investigators from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
This shooting comes just eight days after the murder of 18-year-old Kyser McKeever. McKeever’s murder took place 2.5 miles from the scene of Tuesday night’s shooting. “It appears last night’s shooting was an isolated incident, resulting from a card game (gambling) and is unrelated to last week’s shooting on CR 468,” Iozzi told Lake Legal News.
