LEESBURG, Florida — A man who was observed by a Leesburg Police Department detective swinging a wine bottle at passing cars is in the Lake County Jail facing two charges from the incident.
The LPD detective was investigating a theft case at a local business Wednesday, when he walked out and saw Nathan Ira White, 46, swinging an open bottle of wine at passing cars, according to an arrest affidavit. The detective told White to drop the wine bottle and White ran with the detective chasing behind him.
White ran until he stopped in front of Old Time Diner, 1372 West North Boulevard, Leesburg, where he smashed the bottle, creating a jagged edge. He reportedly screamed, “Just kill me,” to the detective. The detective again told him to drop the bottle and White ran again.
He ran behind Boulevard Plaza and then began walking towards the detective with the broken bottle. The detective began walking backwards and demanding White drop the bottle. White began swinging the broken bottle at the detective and screaming, “Just shoot me.”
White ran a third time behind the plaza and turned onto Glenn Ridge Drive and Miller Street and finally surrendered. White was taken into custody and continued to scream and beg for the detective to kill him during the booking process, the detective noted in the affidavit.
White — who was released from the Lake County Jail last month on other charges — was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. His prior arrests include theft, drug offenses, violation of probation, and a criminal traffic charge. He is being held in the Lake County Jail on $6,000 bond.
