LEESBURG, Florida – A Fruitland Park man caught a bribery charge just after midnight Monday, trying to get out of a DUI.
According to an arrest affidavit, police saw a truck travel from the curb across the lane dividers back and forth four to five times on Citrus Boulevard. Police initiated a traffic stop and Amado Cordova Izaguirre, 35, had a “distinct odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from his breath,” the affidavit states, and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot.
Izaguirre was asked to complete field sobriety tests and he explained he did not know what those were. Since the defendant spoke Spanish, Leesburg Police called a Spanish-speaking officer from Fruitland Park to assist them. During a breath test Izaguirre asked the Spanish-speaking officer, “what do I have to do to make this test appear negative,” and what can be done to “help him out. Hispanic to Hispanic.”
While he was being booked, Izaguirre offered several officers various amounts of money from $300 to $2,000 to release him. He was charged with DUI and bribing a public servant. He was released from the Lake County Jail just after noon Monday on $11,000 bond.
