GROVELAND, Florida – A medical episode caused a two-vehicle crash Thursday, killing a Groveland man, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, the 65-year-old man, who has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin, was northbound on US Highway 27 near Villa City Road when he suffered a medial episode, lost control of the 2013 Ford pickup he was driving and crossed the median into the southbound lanes, said FHP Lt. Kim Montes in a press release.
Shirley Avila Cruz, 42, of Leesburg, swerved to avoid hitting the Ford, but it struck the left rear of the 2009 Toyota SUV she was driving. The Ford then left the roadway and struck a fence.
The driver of the Ford was taken to South Lake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cruz was not injured. The crash remains under investigation, Montes said.
