MOUNT DORA, Florida — A Tavares woman who escaped a sharp-eyed witness in downtown Mount Dora Nov. 30 could not escape the long arm of the law.
Maizy Izzabella Aspy, 18, was picked up on a warrant Friday after being accused of tagging several structures in the bustling retail and dining area.
According to an arrest affidavit, the owner of the Pineapple Place spotted Aspy and Josef Brandt Weiss near a black drawing on the wall. The drawing consisted of #SPEAK FACE with a heart and letter next to it, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The witness confronted the pair and they left. The witness pursued and caught Weiss, 20, of Eustis, but Aspy got away. Police responded and searched Weiss and found permanent markers in various colors, matching the graffiti. Weiss was arrested for criminal mischief — with bond at the Lake County jail set at $2,000.
Weiss denied the vandalism to police and said he was only a lookout for his girlfriend, but refused to provide information to police about her. After taking a closer look at Weiss’ hands, police noticed he had fresh marks on his hands. Along with the damage at the Pineapple Place, police found graffiti at Magical Meat Boutique, 112 West 3rd Avenue and on the train car it leases, Lake Arms, 112 West 5th Avenue; Barrel of Books and Games, 128 West 4th Avenue, Papilio, 120 West 5th Avenue and at a women’s public restroom, located at 237 West 4th Avenue. The estimated cost for repairs is $1,300.
A Mount Dora Police detective spoke with Aspy by phone Dec. 2 and she admitted to being with Weiss when the witness confronted them Nov. 30. She refused to answer questions about the graffiti and said she wanted to speak with a lawyer, according to the probable cause affidavit.
The detective located a Facebook page under the name Maizy Izzabella and found drawings by Aspy. “It appears she signs the drawings with what appears to start with a heart and then the rest of the first name ‘aizy,’” the affidavit states.
Aspy was charged with five counts of criminal mischief and released from the Lake County Jail Sunday on $2,500 bond.
