LAKE COUNTY, Florida — A double fatality closed a major roadway near Groveland Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A 70-year-old man and his 69-year-old female passenger, both of Center Hill, were travelling eastbound on Austin Merritt Road shortly before 10 a.m. when the man attempted to make a left turn on County Road 33, according to FHP Lt. Kim Montes. The man turned directly in the path of a dump truck being driven by a 30-year-old Orlando man. The front of the dump truck, which was carrying sand, hit the right side of the sedan and overturned. Both occupants of the sedan were killed, and the dump truck driver received minor injuries. Both drivers and the passenger in the sedan were wearing their seatbelts and none of their names have been released.
The crash, which closed County Road 33, remains under investigation.
