LEESBURG, Florida – A woman’s attempt to get home safely ended unsuccessfully Friday afternoon after a deputy spotted her sitting on a man’s lap and swerving near a school bus stop.
According to the arrest affidavit, a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy was in an unmarked unit monitoring traffic near Shelley Drive and Keats Drive about 15 minutes before the bus normally drops children off when he spotted a black SUV swerving on both sides of the road. He saw Ashley Wood, 29, sitting on the lap of a white male. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and activated his emergency lights. The SUV sped up and ran a stop sign. The deputy tapped his siren and the SUV finally pulled over. As the deputy approached the vehicle, Wood was still sitting on the man’s lap.
When asked who was driving the SUV, Wood stated she was and made the ironic statement that she “just wanted to get home safely.” The deputy asked for her ID and for her to step out of the vehicle, and she stated, while slurring her words, she only had an ID because her license was suspended for DUI. The affidavit states Wood was “unsteady on her feet, leaning against the side of the SUV to hold herself up, red glassy eyes and she emitted an odor of alcoholic beverage from her person.”
Wood was arrested and charged with and driving on a suspended license with knowledge. A DUI charge was later added. She was released Monday on $12,000 bond.
