LEESBURG, Florida – A 44-year-old Leesburg woman is facing a felony battery on a law enforcement officer charge and a resisting arrest charge after police say she helped pry her juvenile son from their grip. Police were responding to South Street and Florida Avenue in reference to a fight involving a large group of children just released from Oak Park Middle School Friday afternoon.
A juvenile suspect left on foot and a Leesburg Police officer spotted him get into an older model, dark colored vehicle. The officer got behind the vehicle and the suspect got out and began stepping away from the vehicle, according to the arrest affidavit. The officer drew down on the juvenile suspect with his taser and ordered the boy to his knees. While attempting to get the suspect under control, Kristen Hampton, standing to the right of the suspect, was ordered to step back, the affidavit states. Instead she allegedly began arguing with officers and pulling on her son, trying to free him. She bumped an officer with her shoulder and helped free her son – who began to run, requiring officers to give chase.
Hampton was taken to the Lake County Jail and released on her own recognizance on the battery charge and released on $1,000 bond on the resisting arrest charge. Records on Hampton show multiple previous bookings.
