LEESBURG, Florida – An 18-year-old teen is dead following a shooting in broad daylight Monday afternoon.
Kyser McKeever Luther was sitting in the driver’s seat of a red Ford Mustang in front of Leesburg Supermarket, known to locals as the “Yellow Store,” on CR 468, when he was shot by one, possibly two men, around 5 p.m., said Leesburg Police Capt. Joe Iozzi.
Multiple gunshots were fired into the car with at least one striking Luther in the head, according a release by Leesburg Police Department. There was a passenger in the car, but he escaped unharmed, Iozzi said. “We don’t believe this was a random act,” Iozzi said, “We believe he (Luther) was targeted.” Police are looking for a grey sedan and two black males, who were seen near the Mustang at the time of the shooting.
Luther was arrested last month by Lake County Sheriff’s deputies following a traffic stop for an expired tag, near US 27 and Hill Street in Leesburg. The stop was less than 2.5 miles from where Luther was murdered. When deputies searched the vehicle they found a loaded Keltec .380 with an extended magazine under his seat, a digital scale, heroin, methamphetamine and crack cocaine. Luther was arrested on an assortment of charges and released on $33,000 bond. According to the Lake County Clerk of Courts website, Luther pleaded not guilty to those charges just last week. An attempt to reach his Public Defender Benjamin Ayris was unsuccessful.
This is an ongoing investigation. If you have information, call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS or Leesburg Police at 352-728-9862.
