EUSTIS, Florida — Shots rang out just after the City of Eustis’ annual Light-Up Eustis event, injuring one woman in the city’s downtown area Friday night.
According to Eustis Police Chief Gary Calhoun, a woman was near Wells Fargo Advisors and Sol De Mexico when she was shot in the arm by an unknown assailant.
“She was walking and got hit,” Calhoun told Lake Legal News.
Three shots were fired, and the woman was shot in the arm; the injury was a “through-and-through” wound Calhoun said. She was transported to Central Florida Regional Medical Center for treatment, EPD Cpl. Lauren Brown said in a press release. No suspects are in custody.
As LLN arrived on scene an EPD officer was walking around with a rifle in Ferran Park, just across Bay Street telling people to leave the area as Christmas music played in the background.
The shooting, which happened shortly after 9:30 p.m., occurred after the city’s Light-Up event that ended at 9 p.m., but people were still milling around downtown; Calhoun attended the event and had just left about an hour prior to the shooting, he told LLN.
Eddie Munoz, of Eustis, was at nearby Tillie’s Tavern & Grill relaxing and drinking a beer when it happened, he told LLN on scene. People ran in the restaurant/bar and said there was a shooting and employees locked the door, preventing the shooter from possibly coming in, he said.
“Cops and ambulances were flying by,” Munoz said.
Munoz told LLN a red sedan fled the scene, but EPD would not confirm that.
Several employees of downtown businesses and attendees had to wait nearly an hour to get their vehicles because they were behind the crime scene tape on McDonald Avenue that stretched from Bay Street to Eustis Street. It was still a very active scene at 11:30 p.m.
This is an ongoing investigation; if you have information on Friday night’s shooting, call EPD at 352-357-4121.
