TAVARES, Florida — A second detention deputy employed by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office has died after testing positive for COVID-19 in June, said Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lt. John Herrell.
Master Detention Deputy Richard “Rick” Barry, 58, would have celebrated his 25th anniversary with LCSO next month, Herrell said. Barry worked in the jail and regularly worked in the extradition unit.
“When inmate transports ceased earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked to supervise inmates within the jail. He tested positive for COVID-19 on June 16 and has since been in isolation at home,” Herrell said in an email. He died at AdventHealth Waterman, Herrell said.
Barry was highly respected, hard-working and had a great sense of humor, said Herrell.
Last month, Master Detention Deputy Lynn Jones died just one day shy of his 13-year anniversary with LCSO after testing positive for COVID-19. Jones left behind a wife and three daughters.
Details on Barry’s service will be released later. He is survived by his wife Bria, who is also a detention deputy and their son, Brennan.
