LEESBURG, Florida — A single-vehicle crash resulted criminal charges for a driver and an occupant of a stolen vehicle Sunday.
Leesburg Police officers responded to the crash at the 2500 block of West Main Street just after 2 p.m. Sunday and were advised three white males were running from the crash scene, according to an arrest report. Officers canvassed the area and saw three males running behind Speed Track, 2999 West main Street, Leesburg and ordered the trio to stop. Two of the males stopped and were detained by officers and the third male got away, according to an arrest affidavit.
The males were identified by police, but Lake Legal News is not naming the boys due to their ages. One boy admitted to police he was driving the stolen SUV when it crashed and he was found with marijuana in his pocket. The second boy told police he was a passenger and left the scene of the crash to get help. Both boys denied knowing who the third male was, the affidavit states.
Police investigated the crash scene at West Main Street and Nursery Road and found a black backpack containing a stolen gun. The driver was charged with theft of a firearm, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams, resisting an officer without violence, theft of a vehicle and three traffic citations. The passenger was charged with theft of a vehicle and resisting arrest without violence.
