LEESBURG, Florida — Two people were killed in a tragic Christmas Eve crash in Leesburg Tuesday night, said Leesburg Police Capt. Joe Iozzi.
Around 8:30 p.m., a black 2019 Dodge Ram, being driven by Zachery Waldo, 33, of Mount Dora was eastbound on Dixie Avenue approaching Dozier Court, when a 2018 Toyota car being driven by Christopher Smith, attempted to make a left turn on Dozier Court from westbound Dixie Avenue.
Police say the front of the Ram struck the right side of the Toyota, killing Smith, 44, and his passenger, Jessica Smith, 35, both of Eustis. It’s unclear how the two are related.
It’s unknown who had the right-of-way, Iozzi said.
Waldo and his passenger, Kevin Cunningham, 33, were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center for their injuries. Two children, who were passengers in the Toyota, were taken to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for treatment. Their medical conditions are unknown.
The crash is under investigation. If you have information, call Leesburg Police traffic homicide investigators at 325-787-2121.
