EUSTIS, Florida — A Eustis police officer was shot Thursday, drawing a massive response from law enforcement across the state.
The shooting occurred in the parking lot of Winn Dixie at the intersection of County Road 44 and State Road 19 early Thursday afternoon. Details on how the shooting occurred were not available at press time, said Eustis Police Officer Lauren Brown.
Capt. Gary Winheim was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center for his injuries. He is in stable condition, Brown said.
The suspect, Jayson Arron Colvin, 38, is the same suspect in the robbery of the Shell gas station that only Lake Legal News reported on earlier this week.
Covlin took off in a dark-colored SUV and crashed on County Road 450 East near Cookie’s Junkyard & Towing. He fled the crash scene and hundreds of law enforcement officers responded to aid in searching for him. a command post is set up at North Lake County Park. Umatilla schools were also locked down as a precaution.
As of press time, he was not in custody. This is a developing story.
